Olivia Romo is a bilingual poet, water rights advocate, and storyteller from Taos, New Mexico. She earned dual Bachelor’s degrees in English and Chicana/o Studies from the University of New Mexico in 2015. Now based in Santa Fe, Olivia serves as the Northern New Mexico Field Representative for U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich, for agriculture, acequias and land grants.
Olivia’s work masterfully intertwines art and activism. In 2023, she was featured in Ojos Diferentes, an innovative augmented reality project that poetically reimagined Robert Oppenheimer’s office at 109 E. Palace Avenue in Santa Fe. Her published works include “Fighting the Tragedy of the Commons” in the University of New Mexico School of Law’s Natural Resources Journal, and “Sheltering in Place Together on Earth” in the Quivira Coalition’s Reflections on Resilience in Uncertain Times. Her poetry has also been featured in The New York Times, including the 2019 article “Work Songs of the Cowboy Poets.” Her flagship poem, “Bendición del agua,” was highlighted in the Western Folklife Center’s Moving Rural Verse series in 2017.
In addition to her creative work, Olivia is a dedicated community and literary leader. She has curated the Community Storytelling Event for the SOMOS Taos Storytelling Festival for three consecutive years and continues to empower youth through writing workshops. Through her poetry and dynamic public engagement, Olivia mobilizes New Mexicans to protect and navigate the evolving challenges surrounding their land, water, and cultural heritage.
